Enrichment

ENRICHMENT

At Dropmore, we value real-life and cross curricular learning whenever possible. This gives children a full working context of what they are learning and practising as it is linked to a recent event that they have experienced or supports and broadens another area of learning. We believe that it is important to teach children how to use reading and writing to express themselves and communicate their ideas.

Celebrations

We understand that reading and writing can be very worrying and tricky for all children, therefore staff support children in recognising achievement regularly by encouraging them to share their written work in sharing assemblies and rewarding House Points, Head Teachers Awards or Writer of the Week Awards.

Poetry Competition

We have an annual poetry competition to help develop reading, speaking and comprehension skills.
Our poetry competition aims to inspire a love of poetry and performing in all children. Where possible, the poems will be selected in line with our topic that term and always with each individual’s strengths in mind. The poems are sent home and parents are asked to support their child to read the poem accurately, learn it off by heart,  introduce the title and poet before starting and practice performing it in front of others.

Each child will be judged on the following skills:
• Recitation - knowing the poem off by heart.
• Volume - projecting without shouting.
• Expression - using different tones of voice and punctuation.
• Performance - body language, interpretation, actions.

All children are celebrated in this competition, with finalists performing to the whole school.

World Book Day

In order to promote reading as the main focus of the day, our World Book Day event always has a theme, with a staff performance, book shop and a variety of reading and writing activities. We hold a book sale during the day and share our favourite stories. Activities for the day focus on reading for pleasure and celebrating reading skills.
