Science Challenge

15th March 2017

The 17th Annual Dropmore Infant School Science Challenge took place on Wednesday, March 15th, a beautifully warm spring day.  So warm in fact that many of the entries for the first challenge started to droop during the judging process!   Numerous fascinating designs of spaghetti towers, held together only by marshmallows, were on display, some of which towered well in excess of a metre tall.  All the entrants received a house point, with the winners of the tallest towers being awarded a medal and five house points.  Well done Henry, Toby, Elissa and Harry.

In the paper plane throwing contest, the skill was all in the throwing technique. There were some interesting flight paths and inadvertent loop-the-loops, but the winners of the furthest distance thrown were: Louisa (R), Alfie (Y1) and Noah (Y2) who all received a small prize of a model aeroplane.

A fascinating array of home-made xylophones were on display with entries being made from bottles, pipes, spanners, knives, coat-hangers and water-filled drums to name a few. Many of the children had been practising hard to be able to play tunes including ‘Twinkle, twinkle, little star’, ‘Mary had a little lamb’ and even ‘Happy Birthday’, the latter being much appreciated by the member of staff whose birthday it actually was!  All entrants received a house point and the xylophones were placed outside at playtime for everyone to admire and enjoy.
