Enrichment

ENRICHMENT
Enrichment opportunities are carefully selected to enhance learning opportunities for children by demonstrating real life contextual understanding of mathematics. Dropmore children also take part in a number of activities outside of their Maths lessons including Dropmore shop and silver coin week.
DROPMORE SHOP
Dropmore Shop has been set up to help the children count and use money in a real situation. We sell small stationary items, novelty items, books and reflective accessories. We aim to keep the prices for all items between 1p and 30p. Initially the children are allowed to choose one item.  They are encouraged to use the correct change and if this is not possible we encourage them to work out how much change they should get. These are excellent addition and subtraction practice opportunities for all! When they become more confident using money we allow them to buy two items. All the money from the shop is used to buy more items for the shop. It is an educational activity, not a fundraiser.
SILVER COIN WEEK
Silver Coin Week is held in the Spring term where children are asked to bring in silver coins. Each classroom will have a container for the children to donate their silver coins (5p, 10p, 20p and 50p). The classes will be competing against each other for 4 prizes all linked to Maths activities:
  • Length – the class with the longest line of coins
  • Weight – the class with the heaviest set of coins
  • Quantity – the class with the highest number of coins
  • Value – the class with the most money

Throughout the week, the children will be involved in a wide range of Maths activities (counting, sorting, grouping, estimating, measuring, weighing and calculating) using the coins collected in their class.

The money collected in this fun and educational way will go into our School Fund, which is used to pay for extras such as cooking ingredients, Easter eggs and many other fun things.
