Handwriting @ Dropmore

Despite the increased use of computers for writing, the skill of handwriting remains important in education, employment and in everyday life. Time devoted to the teaching and learning of letter formation in the early years will pay off. We aim to make handwriting an automatic process that does not interfere with creative and mental thinking. Handwriting is a basic skill that influences the quality of work throughout the curriculum.

LETTER-JOIN and LCLaS

At Dropmore Infant School we use Letter-join (www.letterjoin.co.uk) and Lesley Clarke's Letters and Sounds, which cover all the requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum, as the basis of our handwriting scheme. We encourage parents and carers to use the Letter-join resources at home with the log-in details that have been shared.

When supporting your child at home with their handwriting, please ensure:

  1. They are using the correct pencil grip and sitting posture (see Handwriting Policy below)
  2. They start all letters in the correct place (see Letter Families resource below)
  3. They position all letters correctly on the line using ascenders and descenders (see Sky/Grass/Ground resource below).
We use letter rhymes from Lesley Clarke to help the children with their letter formation (resource below).
